Privacy policy
Effective
In short: we collect what the app needs to track your nutrition — your account details, profile, and the food, water, weight and fasting data you log. We don’t sell your data, show ads, or use tracking SDKs. Some features send the minimum necessary data to an AI provider to process a request. You can ask us to delete everything at any time.
1. Who we are
Byte Balance (“we”, “us”) is operated by [Operator name], [Registered address], India. We are the data fiduciary (data controller) for the personal data described here. Contact us about privacy at [email protected].
This policy covers the Byte Balance iPhone app and this website, bytebalance.co.in.
2. What we collect and why
| Data | Why |
|---|---|
| Account: name, email address, phone number (if you add one), password (stored only as a secure hash) | To create your account, sign you in and contact you about it |
| Profile: age, sex, height, weight, activity level and goal | To calculate your calorie and macro targets |
| Logs: meals, food photos you scan, barcodes, voice recordings you submit, recipes you import, water, weight, body measurements and fasts | To provide the tracking features you use |
| Nutrition chat messages and history | To answer your questions and keep your conversation history |
| Family: household membership, invite codes, shared meals | To run family features. Members of your household can see the household dashboard, including each member’s daily progress |
| Streaks, points and badges | For motivation features. If you appear on a leaderboard, other users can see your display name and score |
| Device push token and notification settings | To send reminders and notifications you’ve turned on |
| Subscription status | To give you access to paid features. Payments are handled by Apple — we never see your card details |
| Support emails | To answer you |
Health information for Care. If you join Byte Balance Care (nutrition guidance, where available) you may also give us health information such as conditions, medications, allergies and lab results. We process it only with your explicit consent, only for providing that guidance, and you can withdraw consent in the app at any time.
We do not sell or rent personal data, show advertising, use third-party analytics or advertising SDKs in the app, or track you across other companies’ apps and websites.
This website does not use cookies or analytics. Our hosting provider processes standard request logs (such as IP address and browser type) to deliver and protect the site.
3. How we use AI
Photo scanning, voice logging, recipe import, nutrition chat and some personalised suggestions are processed by AI models. For each request we send only the data that request needs — for example, the photo you scanned — to one of these providers:
- Google (Gemini API)
- Anthropic (Claude API)
We don’t store the prompt text of AI requests in our logs, and we don’t use your data to train AI models ourselves. The app may also let you download an AI model to run on your iPhone; when you use it, that processing stays on your device. AI estimates can be wrong — always review a scanned meal before saving it.
4. Where your data is stored and who processes it
We use these service providers (“data processors”) to run Byte Balance:
- Server hosting — [hosting provider, region]: our database and application servers.
- Cloudflare — network security, content delivery and storage of uploaded images.
- Google and Anthropic — AI processing, as described above.
- Apple — App Store payments and push notification delivery.
- Email delivery — account emails such as password resets.
Some of these providers process data outside India, including in the United States. We transfer data only as permitted by applicable law and require providers to protect it.
5. Security
Data is encrypted in transit (TLS). Passwords are hashed with bcrypt. Access to your data is restricted to your own account, and staff access to health information in Care is logged. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach affects your personal data we will notify you and the authorities as the law requires.
6. How long we keep it
We keep your data while your account is active. When you delete your account we erase your personal data from our systems, except where the law requires us to keep a record for a set period — in which case we keep only what is required, for only as long as required.
7. Your rights and choices
Depending on where you live (including under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (India), and the GDPR if you are in the EU or UK), you can:
- access the personal data we hold about you and get a copy;
- correct inaccurate data — most of it you can edit directly in the app;
- delete your account and personal data;
- withdraw consent you have given, such as for Care, without affecting processing before the withdrawal;
- nominate someone to exercise your rights if you die or become unable to;
- complain to us, and then to your data protection authority (in India, the Data Protection Board of India).
To delete your account or get a copy of your data, email [email protected] from the email address on your account. We will confirm and complete the request within 30 days. You can turn off notifications in your iPhone’s Settings, and camera or microphone access at any time.
8. Children
Byte Balance is for adults aged 18 and over and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has given us personal data, contact us and we will delete it.
9. Not medical advice
Byte Balance provides general nutrition information. It is not a medical device and does not diagnose, treat or prevent any disease. See our terms of use.
10. Changes to this policy
If we make a material change we will update the date above and tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect.
